The offer is valid for two months period starting from 1st May 2011. Now PTCL Customers can call to any local or nationwide on-net number for free on Sundays.

Effective from May 1st, 2011 PTCL has increased the line rent of the landline numbers from Rs.174 to Rs.199 (excluding tax). To compensate for this, PTCL has offered free unlimited on-net calls during Sundays for the next two months.

PTCL claims that they initiated this so that the people start using the landline numbers again who have moved on to the cellular networks. But to my personal opinion PTCL is playing a very tactful game to increase the rates of their services. From Rs.2.3 per call PTCL moved to Rs.2.3 per 5minutes and then later to Rs.2.3 per 3minutes but finally landed to the Rs.1 per minute call rate. So I guess, there is no difference left in calling from PTCL or any mobile network, rather Mobile network call charges are lesser in some places.

The area where I live in Lahore, I have seen PTCL guys digging up the side of the road and laying down new Optic Fiber. I think, soon the minimum Internet speed for home users will jump to 4Mbps in Pakistan. PTCL has offered all the 1Mbps customers to upgrade their package to 2Mbps and get 3-months of 2Mbps for the price of 1Mbps. Following are the rates of PTCL DSL Internet connection now:

I think the other DSL providers can’t offer this much high speed Internet connection because of the lack of optic fibre network, so PTCL has the monopoly. 1Mbps connection by PTCL is only offered so that people who use other DSL connections from other companies should have choice. Secondly, I hope PTCL is soon going to allow the students to get the 30% discount on the 2Mbps connection too. Currently PTCL student package only is for 1Mbps connection. I hope to see 4Mbps minimum DSL connection in every house of Pakistan in 2011.

And to attract the customers they are giving a free cordless telephone set with the number. The price of the premium number mentioned about includes the free cordless telephone set. I wonder what kind of attraction that is. A cordless phone and a number for Rs.15k. Yes! and not to forget, beside paying the fees of the premium number, you still have to pay the PTCL connection fees of Rs.2000 which will be added to your first month’s bill.

In the end, the final price of the package is:

What I think about this new campaign by PTCL is that they have thought quite a great thing to start giving customers a golden or platinum number, but the cost of the number is way too much. We live in Pakistan and the average income of an individual living in Pakistan is still not Rs.10,000 per month. How would people afford such numbers? Rather looking at just 0.1% of the rich population of Pakistan, PTCL should concentrate on the rest of 99.9% of the common Pakistan’s population.
