Zong finally made it into the facebook social media network with Facebook Mobile Alert. Now you can update your facebook status, get latest update notifications via SMS on your Zong mobile connection in Pakistan. Yes, Zong is the last network of the five to reach facebook but they did. Now you can add your Zong mobile number in your facebook and enjoy it over your phone.

How to Activate Facebook Mobile Alert on Zong Pakistan?

To activate Facebook alerts, the subscriber will be required to login at : http://www.facebook.com/mobile
Once logged in, the user will be required to click the Account menu and select Account Settings from the drop down menu as shown below:
On registering your number, you will receieve an SMS confirmation code on your mobile phone. Put that mobile code on the facebook popup box (which is the step 2 in the above shown screen) and your service will be activated.

All SMS sent to 32665 will be charged at Rs.1+tax
Receiving notification via SMS is FREE
Standard GPRS charges will apply if GPRS is used.

Users can view the posted photo or comment on the photo by visiting the link on their handset. This would require GPRS activated handset to access the link.

Picture Upload through MMS:

ZONG users can now also upload their pictures straight from their handset on to their facebook profile. To upload a picture user will be required to login into the below link get their unique email address.

Once a user is logged in, they will acquire a unique Facebook-MMS Email ID as shown below. They can find the Email ID under Upload via Email heading. For example purposes only, the Email ID for the logged in account whose snapshot is attached is: agatha703lepton@m.facebook.com.

Or users can simply click “Send my upload email to me now” link under Upload via Email heading and then can receive their unique Facebook-MMS Email ID on their email or mobile handset.

To upload a picture from mobile, user will only be required to MMS their picture to the provided Facebook-MMS Email ID and their uploaded picture will appear on their Facebook under Mobile Upload album.

Now Update Your Twitter Status with Zong

Zong became the second company after Mobilink to partner up with Twitter so that the users can use twitter and tweet right from their mobile phones with SMS. So now Twitter users who own a Zong connection can tweet, receive updates, send direct messages and retweet. SMS ‘Start’ from your Zong to 40404 to activate the service.

Officially twitter SMS service for Zong customers has started in Pakistan now. As per the blogs ninja.pk and propakistani, it is stated that the normal SMS rates apply while using twitter sms based services and if you have activated any SMS bundle/bulk package then SMS is free. I have not tested it myself on Zong connection, so unable to give you surity about this. But what I believe is that SMS send to special short codes are not included in the free bulk sms packages. All the SMS to short codes by all cellular companies in Pakistan are charged at Rs.1+tax per sms at least (which obviously vary depending on service being utilized, but at least the charges are Rs.1+tax.)

@mudassarijaz on twitter just confirmed me that he has the SMS bundle/bulk package of Zong, and tweeting with SMS on Zong is totally free for him.

How to activate Twitter SMS on Zong?

Simply SMS ‘start‘ to 40404.

Zong Pocket TV Introductory Offer Expires On 6th April

Watch TV on your mobile phone with Zong Pocket TV service in Pakistan. Zong introduced this services couple of weeks ago which enables you to watch variety of local and international TV channels on the go on your mobile phone handset. Whether its news, sports or music, customers can enjoy the live streaming of TV on their handsets.

Till 6th of April 2011 the Pocket TV service of Zong is free and then most probably they will start charging their customer on monthly basis. We are still not sure that what type of charges are going to be imposed on this service either monthly charges or per minute charges. One thing to note is, the standard GPRS/Edge Internet charges still do apply for using this service. So if there is going to be any additional charges then they are going to be in addition to the GPRS charges as per package plan.

How to watch TV on mobile with Zong Pocket TV service in Pakistan?

From your handset browser simply open http://pockettv.zong.com.pk/
The URL will open the Zong Pocket TV page on your phone where the channel list is displayed.
Clicking on any of the channel links will open the channel stream in the media player of your phone.

Unfortunately this service does not work on Apple products such as iPhone or iPad. The handsets which are supported to use this service are Nokia, Android based handsets and Windows mobile phones.

Handset Compatibility and basic requirements for the service:

Only EDGE supported handsets with a Streaming Media Player (supports H.264 codec + RSTP link) like Real Player will work with Zong Pocket TV service.
All Nokia handsets have a Built-in Real player application that plays Streaming links; subscriber has to set his/her edge settings of streaming player up to 84.42 kbps for using the Zong Pocket TV service.
Streaming player in Java OS phones such as Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, and LG will work with Zong Pocket TV service.
Windows OS phones such as Imate and HTC will also be able to use the service.
Android OS phones will also be able to use this service.
Old handsets that have streaming players that lack H.264 codec support will not be able to work with Zong Pocket TV service.
Apple OS phones/tablets will not work with Zong Pocket TV service.

Unlock Zong IDEOS u8150 in Pakistan, Android Froyo 2.2 Handset

Zong introduced the Huawei IDEOS u8150 in Pakistan and reduced it’s price to Rs.10,999 which created huge demand of it in the market. A 528Mhz Processor, 3.2MP Camera, Android Froyo 2.2 makes it the most worthy phone in the most affordable rates in Pakistan. Unfortunately the handset provided by ZONG is locked to Zong’s network only. You cannot use it on any other network. I found a guy in Lahore who is unlocking this handset, you can contact him by filling the form in this post at the bottom.

The guy is charging Rs.2200 for the unlock code. All you have to do is provide him with the IMEI number and within 1 to 2 days he will reply you back with your unlock code. You can contact him using the form below. So the total cost of the handset you can count is Rs.10,999 + Rs.2,200. Still I don’t think its a bad deal in Rs.13.2k you cannot get any other handset which is brand new and has these all features.

Experience with ZONG’s IDEOS Android Handset

After the price reduction of the Zong’s Huawei IDEOS Android Froyo 2.2 handset in Pakistan everyone started looking at it, because it is obviously the most affordable handset with the latest version of Android. Last week, I bought the handset too so that I can have a look at it, use it and enjoy the android environment. Unfortunately, the handset sold by Zong is locked and can only be used on ZONG’s network.

At the time of purchasing the handset, I deposited Rs.500 balance too and thought it would be more than enough to spend a month. Zong also gives 8MB/month GPRS Internet usage free on the purchase of this handset, and later on the regular package price of GPRS is charged. I am a facebook and twitter-holic person so I connected to it and while I’m in office and home, IDEOS shifts to my local Wifi Internet and while I’m on the move then GPRS is used. I bought the handset on 23rd Feb. 2011 in afternoon and on 28th Feb. I thought lets check the balance. I was shocked to see, that I only had Rs.48 balance remaining. I never downloaded any song, video, youtube or even browsing, rather simply used to connect my IMs through Nimbuzz and my facebook & twitter from their apps. In just 4 days I had to bear the cost of almost Rs.450 just for the GPRS, Oh and I never called or SMS from the connection either.

I then figured out, that Android Froyo 2.2 handset runs many applications in the backend. If you signed in to your Facebook and synced the contact with it, then everytime you are browsing your contact list Internet is used. Same is the case with twitter, skype and gtalk. Plus the most traffic is consumed when you use the SPEAK feature of the keyboard to type. When I checked on the Zong’s eCare online billing details, I was shocked to see that I bought the connection on 23rd Feb evening and on 24th Feb 6am it started charging me for GPRS usage. The billing details on the ecare page is so confusing, I got no idea what does the “discount” column means and there is no where you can see how much data transfer was consumed. So either I was not given the free 8MB/GPRS or may be it consumed the 8MB within less than 12 hours.

I cannot blame ZONG for it either, because I am not sure myself that how the handset consumed this much traffic. I did try few applications later for task manager and has the ability to kill running processes on IDEOS. I found out that even if you close ‘HuaweiOnlineUpdates’ it starts again, similarly the ‘News’ widget which refreshes after a particular time (set by you). Facebook feed refresh and twitter timeline refresh all are using your GPRS heavily.

One thing that confused me more was, ZONG by default assigned me M9 package of 1.5. The package details are ‘M9 Plan Rate 1.50 | SMS 0.70 | Internet 11.0 paisas‘ but when I logged into the eCare customer information page it shows something different to me. It says ‘M9 Plan Rs 1.50 per min, Rs 0.70 per SMS, GPRS for 150 paisa‘. Now I have no idea, was I over billed or was it actually charged at correct rate.

If there was some problem in the billing then this is seriously bad, because they took away almost Rs.500 in 4 days which means within a month, Zong will recover the Rs.5000 discount on the handset they offered. I called the helpline after this and they said, sir smartphones have backend running processes which consume your Internet traffic, kindly subscribe to the GPRS packages with us which are on monthly basis plans.

Finally I decided to get my Huawei (Zong) Android handset unlocked so that I can use other networks on it too. For details on the unlocking it, please see my other post of unlocking Zong IDEOS u8150 handset in Pakistan.

Zong Android Handset IDEOS Price Reduced to Rs.10,999 only

Zong last year in October introduced Zong IDEOS the most affordable Android 2.2 Froyo handset in Pakistan with the collaboration of Huawei. Zong M9 – New Low Call Rate Service

Zong, A china mobile company being the one of the biggest company in Asia with over 300million customers and claims to have over 250million calls per hour is launching a new service called ‘M9 – What’s your plan?‘. The details of the service are not sure yet but their website http://m9.com.pk seems to have something to do with numerology.

Customer’s can book their numbers and can also ask for a suggestion for a number from the famous numerologist Waseem Jaffry, who’s algorithm is used online on their website to calculate the lucky number from your name or whatever text you enter to find out your M9 Number for your new mobile connection.

Some websites confirmed that they got to know somehow that it is a new service by Zong, just similar to the new trend of every mobile service in Pakistan. Mobilink recently launched the Jazz Jazba service after following the Warid Glow which followed Telenor Djuice product. So now we have Zong stepping in with similar thing and but in a new concept. They are not actually targeting the Youth of the nation, rather they have started an entirely new issue of astrology and numerology.

Above was the TV commercial which was leaked by someone of M9. According to the source websites, Zong M9 is a new service which will have 12 different calling packages and call rate will vary between Rs.2.20/min to Rs.0.90/min and will have the SMS bundle packages, Weekend calls and Friends & Family.

Yes, it has everything you are looking for. For music you have the 3.5mm stereo headset pin. For Internet access, you have free 6 months of GPRS (8mb data transfer per month for 6 months) and the Wi-Fi to access wireless Internet. For more extended memory, you can insert a microSD card too.

One more thing which is so far confusing for me is, some websites which Huawei Ideos description say that the screen is 2.8″ with 256k color and most of them don’t mention the color because a TFT screen with Andriod is usually with 16million colors which is a standard now. So I am not sure whether it has 16mil colors or just 256k screen.

Therefore, special blackberry service is used for such purposes and obviously it is charged extra in addition to your regular package.

Zong has introduced to latest blackberry handsets with this service – Blackberry Bold 9000 and Blackberry Curve 8900. The cost of the handset is Rs.45,000 and Rs. 40,000 respectively.

Zong Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) Charges:

Rs.1000 + tax per month
Unlimited GPRS Free
Additional security deposit of Rs.500 to be made for Blackberry Internet Services.
